Greek Government Funds €6.8m in Flood Defence Works in Evros

Deputy Interior Minister Vasilis–Petros Spanakis announced that more than €6.8 million had been allocated for flood protection projects in the Evros region, highlighting government efforts to strengthen local infrastructure against extreme weather events.

Speaking in the Hellenic Parliament during a discussion of a parliamentary question on flood prevention works in the border region, Spanakis outlined the financial tools used by the Interior Ministry to support the municipality of Alexandroupoli and the wider Evros area.

He said the ministry had approved projects aimed at addressing flooding in areas of the Alexandroupoli municipality with a total budget of €1.8 million. The initiative aimed to increase the resilience of local infrastructure against severe weather conditions.

Spanakis also noted that residents of Alexandroupoli had been informed on 10 February 2026 about the findings of a related study concerning flood protection measures in the city. In addition, he submitted photographic material to parliament documenting works already completed under Subproject 3, which had a budget of €800,000.

The interventions included improvements to the streams of Kandilapti, Agnantias and A3 Neas Chilis, as well as works north of the Apalos settlement.

He added that no request submitted by local authorities to the Interior Ministry had gone unexamined, unanswered or unimplemented. Further flood prevention projects worth €5 million were currently under way in the municipalities of Alexandroupoli and Orestiada through additional government funding.

Concluding his remarks, Spanakis stressed that the climate crisis would remain a challenge for decades to come, noting that the government of New Democracy continued to work closely with municipalities and regional authorities to address its impacts.
