Dubai: 50 Greeks Unable to Repatriate as They Refuse to Leave Pets Behind

Around 50 Greeks remain stranded in Dubai after refusing to board repatriation flights that do not allow pets, as calls grow for a solution.

Around 50 Greek citizens remain stranded in Dubai, unable to return home, as they refuse to board repatriation flights that do not allow pets on board.

According to animal welfare organization Dog’s Voice, pets have been explicitly prohibited on the repatriation flights that have so far departed from Dubai and the wider United Arab Emirates.

Although some commercial flights do allow animals, strict limits apply, with only three pets permitted per aircraft, while the costs for transporting animals are reportedly very high. In addition, bureaucratic procedures for pet travel documents require time, creating further difficulties for travelers already struggling to secure seats on flights.

“All their travel documents are ready and up to date, yet they remain stranded,” Dog’s Voice noted, highlighting the frustration among those waiting for a solution.

Affected passengers have reportedly contacted consulates, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and airlines, but so far no practical solution has been found that would allow them to travel with their pets.

The organization also noted that citizens from other countries are facing the same dilemma, as many refuse to abandon animals they consider part of their families.

As the crisis continues, growing concerns have been raised about pets being abandoned at airports and public spaces, while calls increase for authorities and airlines to find a humane solution that allows owners and their animals to travel safely together.
