From October 16 to 26, the Onassis Foundation invites audiences to experience the fifth annual "Big Short Films" event, showcasing 22 award-winning short films from the Drama International Short Film Festival and the Athens International Film Festival.
These films will be available for streaming on the Onassis Channel on YouTube and on onassis.org.
This year's selection features a diverse array of themes, including human relationships, childhood, the complexities of violence, coming-of-age narratives, and life in rural Greece. The films serve as a mirror to society, prompting viewers to reflect on both their internal struggles and the world around them.
“Art exists to confront us with darkness and ultimately draw us back to the light,” stated the National Competition Jury of the Drama International Short Film Festival 2023.
The lineup includes thought-provoking works such as Light of Light, which merges metaphysical exploration with cinematic art; Unorthodox, which critiques faith and hypocrisy; and Midnight Skin, offering a blend of emotional and cerebral storytelling.
Audiences will encounter relatable characters and compelling stories, such as a fragmentary biopic of Kafka in Kafka's Collection of Porn, and a poignant narrative about love transcending barriers in Crossing. Other notable entries include Days of a Lilac Summer, which examines teenage desire; Aerolin, portraying the struggles of urban survival; and Buffer Zone, highlighting love as a beacon of hope.
Additional films explore themes of identity, friendship, and societal expectations. For instance, Good Girls Club: A Virginity Odyssey reflects on coming-of-age moments, while The Parade offers a glimpse into the lives of high school students rebelling against national traditions. The essay film Athens, My Love investigates the city's political history, and Greenhouse follows a man's pursuit of his dreams against the odds.
The collection also tackles profound societal issues, from the treatment of the elderly in The Armchair on the Pavement to the complexities of breakup in Super. Other titles, like Achinos and A Diary of Sexual Solitude, explore personal boundaries and desires, while The Chaos She Left Behind illustrates the resilience of love amidst adversity.
As the event unfolds, viewers can tune in at their convenience, whether alone or with others, and immerse themselves in the powerful narratives that these remarkable short films offer.
