Canberra, March 25, 2025—The Leader of the Opposition and Federal Member for Dickson, the Hon. Peter Dutton MP, extended heartfelt greetings to Australians of Greek heritage as they commemorate Greek Independence Day. In an annual tradition, Dutton, on behalf of the Coalition, praised the resilience and courage of the Greek people, both in their historic fight for freedom and their enduring contributions to modern Australia.

Reflecting on the significance of the day, Dutton highlighted the Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821 and ended nearly 400 years of Ottoman rule after an eight-year struggle. “The conflict brought in foreign powers and saw Greece rocked by civil war too,” he noted, drawing parallels to Greece’s ancient battles against Persia and its resistance to Axis powers during World War II. “Greek patriots fought with courage for their freedom against those hell-bent on domination,” he said.

Dutton emphasized that Greek Independence Day serves as a tribute to the “strength and determination” that define the Greek spirit. He connected this legacy to the post-World War II migration of Greeks to Australia, where they played a vital role in shaping the nation. “That same strength and determination was displayed by Greeks who migrated to Australia in the aftermath of the Second World War and helped build our modern nation,” he remarked. He called it “a success story which we must continue to tell future generations of Australians.”

In closing, Dutton wished all Australians of Greek ancestry a joyful celebration. “A happy Greek Independence Day to all,” he said, underscoring the Coalition’s appreciation for the community’s enduring impact. The message comes as Greek-Australians across the country mark the occasion with events, including the singing of the Greek and Australian national anthems, reflecting their dual pride in heritage and home.
