Severe Weather Hits Crete: Emergency Alert Issued as Driver Trapped in Chania

The wave of extreme weather sweeping across Greece has now reached Crete, with authorities sounding the alarm through the 112 emergency system earlier today.

Following devastating floods in several Cycladic islands, Crete has become the latest target of the storm, with intense weather phenomena expected to persist until the early hours of Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

A warning message sent via the 112 service urged residents to remain cautious: “Severe weather phenomena, locally and intermittently intense, are expected in Crete from now until the morning of 02/04/2025. Exercise caution during travel and follow the instructions of the authorities.”

According to the latest emergency bulletin from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast to batter western and southern Crete from Tuesday evening (01/04/25) through Wednesday morning (02/04/25).

Driver Trapped in Chania
The situation escalated in Chania, where torrential rain and lightning began at 8 a.m., transforming streets into rivers within minutes. Local reports from Cretapost confirmed that a driver became trapped in floodwaters, requiring intervention from the Fire Service to free them. Several vehicles were immobilised, sparking widespread traffic chaos in the area.

Fire Truck Accident Amid Rescue Efforts
Adding to the turmoil, a fire service vehicle responding to an emergency call fell into a ditch near the Mournies junction, on a side road off the national highway in Chania. The incident, attributed to the relentless storm conditions, underscored the severity of the weather’s impact on the island.

As the storm continues its assault on Greece, authorities are urging residents and visitors in Crete to stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines until the worst of the weather subsides.
