The Greek artistic community is mourning the loss of renowned actress Katerina Yioulaki, who passed away at the age of 87, leaving behind a rich legacy in theater, film, and television.
Born Katerina Yiouvarlaki in Athens in 1938, Yioulaki graduated from the National Theatre’s Drama School and made her stage debut in 1959 alongside the theater troupe of Dino Iliopoulos in the play The Lady of the Gentleman. Known for her vibrant comedic roles, she became a household name in Greek cinema during the 1960s and 1970s, starring in beloved films such as The Grooms of Eftychia, My Friend Lefterakis, Jack of All Trades, Master of None, The Heirs, The Ladies of the Courtyard, The Stingy Man, An Italian Girl from Kypseli, Rebel Popolaros, and The Princess’s Fool.

Yioulaki’s charm and versatility shone brightly on television, where she captivated audiences in the early 1970s with the series Kokoromyali. She continued to win hearts in the 1980s with roles in The Lion Cubs of Mr. Ilias and Our Lady. A career highlight was her iconic portrayal of Katerina Sofianou in the popular Mega Channel series Retire, which cemented her status as a comedic legend. One of her final television appearances was in the 2006 series Seven Deadly Mothers-in-Law.

In recognition of her contributions to Greek theatre, Yioulaki was honoured with the Greek Playwrights’ Society Award in 1996, reflecting the deep admiration of both her peers and audiences.
Her passing marks the end of an era for Greek entertainment, but her unforgettable performances will continue to bring joy to generations of fans worldwide.
