Zelenskyy Congratulates Cyprus on EU Council Presidency, Urges Strong Support for Ukraine

Nikos Christodoulides

January 2, 2026 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides on Thursday, congratulating him as Cyprus officially assumes the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first half of 2026.

In a post on X, Zelenskyy expressed hope that the Cypriot presidency would deliver "strong decisions that will strengthen Ukraine and all of Europe" over the next six months.

"Ukraine’s membership in the European Union is one of the security guarantees for us," Zelenskyy wrote, emphasizing that Kyiv is "always doing everything necessary" to advance its accession process.

The Ukrainian leader also briefed President Christodoulides on recent contacts with American partners and the broader diplomatic landscape, underscoring that efforts toward peace continue "practically around the clock, there can be no pauses."

Zelenskyy thanked Cyprus and its people for their ongoing support, highlighting Christodoulides' "warm words" about Ukraine and Ukrainians.

Cyprus took over the six-month EU Council presidency from Hungary on January 1, 2026. Nicosia has pledged to prioritize EU enlargement, energy security, and migration during its term—issues directly relevant to Ukraine's European aspirations and the ongoing war with Russia.

The call comes amid intensified diplomatic activity as Ukraine seeks continued Western backing and progress toward EU membership negotiations.
