Police arrested three suspects after investigators linked them to a gang that targeted bank customers, slashed their car tyres and stole cash and valuables worth more than €100,000.
The group carried out at least 10 thefts using the same method, according to reports. The suspects allegedly followed people who withdrew large sums from banks and then waited for an opportunity to strike.
Broadcaster MEGA obtained CCTV footage showing how the gang operated. In one incident, a driver pulled over at the side of the road and stepped out of a red car. A motorcyclist approached and asked for directions, keeping the driver distracted. Moments later, another man appeared behind the vehicle, opened a door and grabbed a bag before leaving.
Investigators said the gang first monitored potential victims inside banks. One member reportedly posed as a customer and watched the counter to identify people withdrawing large amounts of money. The suspect then alerted accomplices waiting in a rented vehicle, which they allegedly hired using forged documents.
The gang then followed the target and, during a short stop, slashed the car’s tyre without being noticed. After the driver realised the problem and got out of the vehicle, one suspect offered fake assistance or kept the victim busy while another stole personal belongings and cash.
Police arrested three alleged members of the group — a 50-year-old woman, a 33-year-old man and a 19-year-old man — while authorities continued searching for three more suspects.
Officers took the detainees to the public prosecutor, and the investigation continued.
