Riot Police Operation Leads to Twenty Arrests at University

Greek police carried out an operation shortly after midnight at the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), after reports said individuals had gathered inside the building despite the school being closed. Officers detained more than 20 people during the intervention.

Sources said organisers had issued a call for a film screening at 8pm. However, some attendees reportedly remained inside the premises after the event ended, prompting police to intervene.

University authorities had previously ordered that no events take place within AUTh facilities following recent incidents on campus. The decision aimed to protect the institution’s smooth operation and prevent further tensions.

The operation involved riot police (MAT), OPKE units, State Security, and Immediate Action forces. Police entered the university premises, carried out checks, and made detentions under a strong security presence.

Authorities have not yet officially announced the exact number of those detained, nor confirmed whether the detentions will be converted into arrests.
