One of the most iconic tributes to the heroism and tragedy of the Greek Revolution is finally returning to its birthplace.
Eugène Delacroix’s legendary painting Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi (1826) is leaving the Museum of Fine Arts Bordeaux to be displayed at the Xenokrateio Archaeological Museum.

Painted shortly after the 1826 Exodus of Missolonghi, the work depicts Greece as a grieving woman among the ruins and fallen heroes, capturing both the pain and resilience of the nation.
Now, exactly 200 years later, the painting comes ‘home’ for a limited exhibition from March 14 to November 2026.

Art and history lovers will not want to miss this rare loan — a moving reminder of Greece’s unbreakable spirit of freedom.
