The Greek-owned tanker “Sounion,” carrying 150,000 tons of oil, is being towed to a safe anchorage north of the Red Sea by the Greek salvage vessel “Aigaion Pelagos” and the rescue tug “Panormitis.” The vessel, which has been burning for over four weeks due to a Houthi attack, is accompanied by three warships, including the frigate Psara. Efforts are now focused on extinguishing the fires and sealing damage caused by explosives, while the 25-member crew has been safely evacuated to Djibouti.
Secrecy continues to surround the salvage efforts for the Greek tanker Sounion, ablaze in the Red Sea since early September. However, signs indicate a second attempt to salvage the vessel began on Friday, September 13th, with Greek tugs dispatched to tow the tanker to a safer location.
The salvage operation for the MT Sounion in the Red Sea faces challenges as conditions are deemed unfit for towing, prompting a search for alternative solutions. The tanker poses a significant environmental risk with its cargo of 1 million barrels of oil, following an attack by Houthi militants. Operation ASPIDES continues to ensure navigation safety in the area.
