On January 30, 2023, Captain Efstathios Tsitlakidis (31) and Lieutenant Marios-Michail Touroutsikas (29) tragically lost their lives when their Hellenic Air Force F-4E Phantom II crashed into the Ionian Sea during a low-altitude training flight from Andravida Air Base. Due to the extremely low height, neither pilot could eject. Their sacrifice continues to be honored, with a monument unveiled in Katakolo in 2025. Heroes and patriots
