Greece recorded a primary surplus of €9.35 billion in the first nine months of 2025, more than €4 billion above target, driven by higher tax revenues and reduced public spending, according to official data from the General Accounting Office.

Greece reported a primary surplus of €8.74 billion for January to September 2024, significantly exceeding the government’s target of €5.3 billion. Driven by higher tax revenues and controlled spending, this marks a strong fiscal performance compared to the same period last year. The Ministry of Economy and Finance highlighted that tax revenues exceeded projections by €2.6 billion, while overall expenditures remained below target, contributing to the surplus.
Greece has finalized a deal to acquire 20 advanced F-35A Lightning II fighter jets from the United States, marking a significant upgrade to its military capabilities. The agreement, valued at €3.47 billion, includes an option to purchase an additional 20 aircraft in the future. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias hailed the acquisition as a crucial step in bolstering Greece’s defense posture and deterring potential threats.
