Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the enthronement of Abbot Symeon at St. Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai on Thursday, declaring the preservation of its Greek Orthodox character a “national duty.” His presence signalled the end of a diplomatic rift with Egypt over a court ruling transferring monastery lands to the state, with both sides now “very close” to a final agreement that secures the site’s religious autonomy and operational future.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Mount Athos, announcing a €100 million economic support plan until 2030 to maintain monasteries, restore post-earthquake damage, preserve relics, and enhance pilgrim facilities. Welcomed by the Double Holy Assembly in Karyes, he emphasized Mount Athos’ role as a spiritual and historical beacon, pledging government support amid global challenges.
The Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry announced the resignation of Mount Athos governor Anastasios Mitsialis. He will be succeeded by retired Hellenic Army General Staff chief and former National Defense Minister, General Alkiviadis Stefanis.
