Three Greek citizens have been fined by the Fire Department following a blaze in the forested Panepistimioupoli campus in Zografou, Athens. The penalties were issued for unsafe practices, including smoking out bees and illegal garbage dumping, which violated fire safety regulations.
The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) has been awarded “Tourist Board of the Year 2024” at the prestigious TTG Travel Industry Awards, held in London. The GNTO was recognised for its innovative promotional strategies and leadership in sustainability, alongside its swift response to the 2023 summer wildfires. Greece’s Sani Resorts in Halkidiki also won the “Sustainable Travel Company of the Year” award.
On Sunday, Greece was hit by over 60 wildfires, with 45 igniting in the afternoon alone due to intense lightning activity, particularly in Attiki, Viotia, and Evia. Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias reported that while significant fires in several areas, including Aliveri and Nafplio, have been contained, the blaze in Aghios Athanassios is only partially under control.
