Greek-Owned Tanker Carrying Russian Oil Hit by Explosion

A Greek-owned tanker, *Vilamoura*, carrying Russian oil was damaged by an explosion 80 nautical miles off Benghazi, Libya, likely due to sabotage. Owned by TMS Tankers Ltd, the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel’s steering system was disabled, and it is being towed to Piraeus. A magnetic mine with a timed mechanism was found. This is the fifth 2025 incident involving tankers loaded with Russian oil from Novorossiysk, violating sanctions imposed after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

A Greek suezmax tanker, Vilamoura, managed by TMS Tankers, suffered an engine room explosion just 12 hours after departing Libya’s Zueitina port with 1 million barrels of crude oil. The incident, possibly linked to a magnetic mine, caused flooding but no injuries or oil spills. The vessel is now being towed south of Greece as investigations continue.
