NSW Premier Chris Minns and Minister for Veterans David Harris have announced Greece and Crete as the 2026 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship tour destinations, marking the 85th anniversary of the 1941 Greek and Crete Campaign.
Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias attended celebrations in Tinos for the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos and the 85th anniversary of the torpedoing of the Greek cruiser Elli by an Italian submarine in 1940. The attack, which killed nine sailors during peacetime, marked a turning point in the events leading to Greece’s entry into World War II.
The Greek Presidential Guard, or Evzones, visited Sydney in a moving tribute to the shared history of Greece and Australia. From marching at the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park to honoring Anzac sacrifices at Greek Orthodox churches, their presence celebrated a legacy of alliance forged in WWII and beyond.

On May 8, 1945, the last Nazi garrisons in Greece surrendered to Allied forces, marking the end of World War II in Europe. Among them was an Australian, Sub Lieutenant Andrew John Robertson, who played a pivotal role in accepting the surrender on Rhodes and Symi.
