Greece Faces Another Potential Hiking Tragedy as Two Tourists Go Missing

Following closely on the heels of the tragic discovery of British TV personality Michael Mosley's body on Symi island, Greece is grappling with two new disappearances of tourists.

Albert Calibet, a 59-year-old American known for his yearly visits to Amorgos, vanished on Tuesday. He was last seen embarking on a hike towards Katapola village. "He's been coming to Amorgos almost every year for about a decade," revealed Popi Despotidi, the island's deputy mayor of tourism, in a CNN interview.

Adding to the growing concern, a 74-year-old Dutch tourist disappeared on the island of Samos on Sunday. His last known location was the Marathokampou area, where he was hiking. A massive search and rescue operation, spearheaded by the Hellenic Rescue Team of Samos and supported by local volunteers, is currently underway.

Greek authorities, including police and fire brigade, are actively searching both land and air for the missing tourists. Konstantia Dimoglidou, a spokesperson for the Greek police, confirmed the ongoing efforts but admitted, "Unfortunately, so far we have no news about either of them."

These disappearances coincide with a severe heatwave gripping Greece, reaching its peak on Thursday according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service. The service issued an orange warning – their second highest alert level – for extreme heat, further complicating the search and rescue operations.
