Greek Minister rescues an Italian swimmer in Lefkada

An Italian swimmer was rescued by Deputy Minister of Education Angelos Syrigos at Porto Katsiki beach in Lefkada when he was in danger of drowning.

Syrigos ran to get the man out of the sea and the Italian was saved thanks to the intervention of the deputy minister and another swimmer who ran and took out the man who was in danger from the sea.

The Coast Guard was immediately notified.

Syrigos is in Lefkada, where he attends the events for the celebration of the Patron Saint of the island Panagia Faneromeni as a representative of the Government.

He is a Greek lawyer, Associate Professor of International Law and Foreign Policy at Panteion University, Member of Parliament for Athens A with New Democracy and, since January 4, 2021, Deputy Minister of Education and Religion, responsible for Higher Education issues.

The responsibilities assigned to him mainly concern the changes of the service, the representation of the Ministry of Education in the European Union and the issuance of regulatory decrees with other competent ministries and bodies.

He has authored various articles and books, including in 1998 'The status of the Aegean Sea according to international law', in 2006 the 'Annan Plan, legacies of the past and prospects for the future', in 2015 'Greek-Turkish relations' in collaboration with professor of History of the Postwar World at the University of Athens, Evanthi Hadjivassiliou, in 2019 the book "The Prespa Agreement and the Macedonian Question" and in 2022 "Asia Minor Disaster: 50 questions and answers."
