Two Arrested Over Luxury Amanzoe Hotel Fire

two arrested in connection with amanzoe fire

A Greek man and an Albanian man have been arrested in connection with the Kranidi wildfire that also damaged uber-luxurious resort and hotel, Amanzoe on Monday.

The two suspects were performing electrical work at a nearby construction site when a short circuit caused the bushfire which ravaged the area.

According to police, the men had knowledge of the layout of the electrical wires to the hotel as they had worked on the construction of the hotel in the past.

Both men were charged with negligent arson and will appear in court on Friday.

The fire in Kranidi broke out on July 4 and quickly spread to the Amazoe resort due to strong winds.

Around 40 people, visitors and employees were evacuated from the hotel and transferred to safety by boat after initially being “trapped” by the fire at the resort’s private beach, reported local news website argolida24.gr.

According to the Fire Service, the fire caused serious damage to bungalows, but the evacuation operation was successful and without any injuries, reported local media.

Some of the bungalows at the 5 star resort Amanzoe were said to be damaged externally in addition to the resorts landscaping.

The hotel will be closed for assessment by its insurance company.

A statement on the resort website read:

We can confirm that a wildfire started near Amanzoe on Monday 4 July and reached the grounds of the property.  All guests and staff were safely and swiftly moved to alternative accommodation.

We are very grateful to the local authorities and volunteers who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and who remain on site to continue to monitor the situation.

As of 5 July we can confirm that the extent of the fire is not as bad as initially feared. We are relieved to report that all main areas of the hotel have been preserved, with exterior damage to just a limited number of pavilions, while all villas remain intact. Sections of the surrounding landscape have been impacted. Amanzoe has temporarily suspended operations until further assessment is made.

Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time, please note that we are contacting any guests with imminent reservations. A further update will be provided in due course.
