The countries with the most islands; Australia has more than Greece

According to leading provider of market and consumer data Statista, Greece does not have the most islands, but it’s up there in the top 10, with a Scandinavian country coming in first place.

Uninhabited and inhabited islands are included in the data, with surprisingly for most, Sweden coming in first place with most islands at 221,800, the majority of which are uninhabited.

Whilst Greece records some 6,000 islands at 10th place, Australia is at 6th place with 8,222 and Thailand in 11th place with 1,430.

Meanwhile Finland has about 188,000 islands, placing it second on the list with Norway in third place with 55,000.

Statistics Canada claims that Canada has 52,455 islands, placing it fourth by a considerable distance. Baffin Island in the territory of Nunavut is the largest of them and it covers 195,928 square miles.
