World Pi Day 2023 is celebrated today, March 14, 2023, all across the globe. Pi Day was first discovered by Lerry Shaw. It is observed on March 14 every year and there is an interesting significance being it. To know more, read below

World Pi Day: Why is it observed from 1.59 pm?

World Pi Day is celebrated every year on March 14 to recognise the mathematical constant, Pi. The approximate value of Pi is 3.14 and when the date is written in a month/day format (3/14) it matches the first three digits of Pi value - 3.14. Fun fact that today the mathematical constant is celebrated from 1.59 pm so that it matches the approx value of the last three digits of Pi - 3.14159.

What is the significance of the mathematical constant

Pi is long and irrational number. The exact value is not known and cannot be known. Hence we can never find the circumference of circle.

The Pi is a part of the Egyptian mythology and the people there believe that the pyramids of Giza were built on the value of Pi.

On this World Pi day, lovers of mathematics celebrate this day every year with fun and interesting quizzes and puzzles.

According to the Rhind Papyrus, the area of a circle in ancient Egypt was calculated by a formula that gave the approximate value of 3.1605 for Pi.

Archimedes of Syracuse, the ancient Greek mathematician, first approximated the area of a circle by using the Pythagorean Theorem.

The Greek letter π began to be widely used by mathematicians in the 1700s.
