Andreas Metaxa, from the Metaxa spirits family and creator of hit Instagram meme account Supersnake, opens up in the Greekspired podcast about overcoming cancer, naysayers, and how a family member’s Oscar has inspired him to make it in Hollywood.
The Instagram account, Supersnake, is worldwide known for its witty and spot on satire of top 1% income earners or the “global party circuit” as Andreas calls them.
The party circuit consists of billionaires, models, fake shamans, promoters and all the people who want to be part of this “elite scene”.
You can find the party circuit traveling to Mykonos, Ibiza, Tulum, St-Barth's, Fashion Weeks, major sporting events or at the poshest restaurants and nightclubs across the world.
Andreas who loves sarcastic humour, drawing a lot of inspiration from South Park and Dave Chapelle, makes fun of stereotypical characters that includes anything from Greek dads who want to marry their sons to close family friends or the models who pose on big yachts, pretending it’s their own.
The Instagram account, which is now a business on its own, was started through a friendly bet.
“I was out with some friends, and we said, whoever can get most followers within a few months will win a nice dinner. We started and I just really enjoyed it and kept going,” he says.
Coming from a well-known Greek family one might think his life has been a bed of roses, but Andreas has gone through more hardships than most at an early age. A few years ago, at the age of 29, Andreas was diagnosed with cancer.
“Going through chemo, during Covid, not knowing if I would survive either the cancer or covid and being totally isolated except for meeting my mother was extremely tough.
“At the same time, I had to keep the Supersnake account going and at that point I was still anonymous, so my followers had no idea about the battles that I was going through,” he tells Greekspired.
Having a Greek Father and American mother, growing up in London, Andreas speaks openly about the bullying he faced, being called either dumb American or a lazy Greek and having to face a lot of naysayers in his life:
“I’ve always wanted to be an actor and people in my surrounding would constantly make fun of me saying things such, “here comes the actor” with a sarcastic laugh."
The dream was born when Andrea saw an Oscar at his sister’s home in Greece who was in a relationship with the famous Greek composer Vangelis.
“I lived with my sister for a while and seeing the Oscar in the house sparked this dream that I’m still carrying,” he says.
Andreas who recently revealed his identity of being the creator behind the Supersnake account, concludes:
“The people who were laughing at me back then, are the same ones complementing me for my work today. And If I can inspire anyone in Greece and beyond with my story of battling cancer, to not giving up on your dreams, it would make me very happy. “
