The life of Asia Minor Greeks, their uprooting, and a new life: New exhibition in Volos

The Cultural Foundation of the Piraeus Group (PIOP), in the context of the commemorative events for the Asia Minor Disaster, is launching the exhibition "From Asia Minor", on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 19:30, at the N. & S. Tsalapata Ceramics Museum, in Volos.

The exhibition is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Federation of Refugee Associations of Greece (O.P.S.E.).

Modern Greek literature plays a leading role in the exhibition narrative, with excerpts from the works of important authors, such as Kosmas Politis, Stratis Myrivilis, Dido Sotiriou, which combines with testimonies of people who lived through the events.

The sections of the exhibition describe daily life in Asia Minor, snapshots from the Asia Minor Campaign, the end and the uprooting, the arrival and treatment of the refugees in Volos, their integration into the city with the establishment of the Nea Ionia Settlement, as well as memory retention.

At the same time, the strong imprint left by the Asia Minor refugees on the local history and development of the region is highlighted, as well as the more general effect their presence had on sectors of Greek society.

Refugee associations of Volos, national and local organisations, as well as private collectors lent PIOP authentic objects from their collections for the realisation of the exhibition.

The touching stories of the people who survived and subsequently settled in Volos are shown through archival material, photos, heirlooms and personal items they brought with them.

Embroidered dowries of the Minoglou family stand out, which the Turks returned to the descendants of the family in Volos, 75 years after the Catastrophe.

Visitor will have the opportunity to see, among other things, clothes, clothing and personal care accessories, icons and church utensils, rare publications such as letters from the Front, diaries and memoirs of prisoners, certificates and documents of integration of refugees in the new homeland.
