According to information obtained by Kathimerini, an investigation has been launched in response to a ransomware attack on the Hellenic Public Properties Company (ETAD). The cyberattack was detected on November 8.
Ransomware attacks involve hackers encrypting an organisation's systems and demanding payment in exchange for decrypting them. These attacks often involve the theft of sensitive data, which is then used to extort victims by threatening to release it online if the ransom is not paid.
Although ETAD officials have not commented on the specific demands of the hackers, they have ruled out the possibility of entering into negotiations with them.
Sources within ETAD have revealed that the company had cyber attack insurance and regularly backed up its files. Upon discovering the attack, they swiftly shut down their systems to prevent the further spread of the malicious software.
In an official statement, ETAD said the IT breach had a limited impact on its operations, and efforts are underway to restore normal functioning gradually.
