Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a meeting with the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Ma'rouf Amin, who is visiting Greece for the first time, on Friday morning at the Maximos Mansion.
During the meeting, in which it was pointed out that 2024 marks the 75-year anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Greece and Indonesia, the two sides expressed a mutual desire to strengthen bilateral relations, especially in the economy and in areas of mutual interest, such as tourism and the blue economy.
The prime minister extended an invitation to Indonesia to participate with a delegation in the 9th "Our Ocean Conference", which will be hosted by Greece in 2024.
The two leaders also exchanged views on issues of international and regional interest, with an emphasis on developments in the Middle East.
The prime minister expressed his condolences for the casualties during the bombing of the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza and reiterated the need for humanitarian pauses and respect for Humanitarian Law.
Mitsotakis reiterated that the solution for sustainable peace in the Middle East is a political one and it is a two-state solution. Finally, he underlined the adherence of Greece and Indonesia to International Law and the Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as a principle for the peaceful resolution of disputes.
Greek FM Gerapetritis meets with visiting Indonesian VP
Greek Foreign Affairs Minister George Gerapetritis held a working luncheon on Thursday with Indonesian Vice-President Ma'ruf Amin, who is on an official visit to Greece.
Gerapetritis thanked the vice-president for his country's support of Greece's candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2025-2026, while both officials agreed on the need to respect religious tolerance, and on the importance of recognizing the Law of the Sea, given their geography.
Greece has signed a Bilateral Economic Action Plan with Indonesia, one of the 20 largest economies globally. The two countries have developed a significant collaboration in defense and technology, while bilateral trade is growing annually.
Greece would like to serve as Indonesia's entrance gate to the European markets, Gerapetritis said, recognizing the sharp rise of the economic growth of the world's largest Muslim country.
A social media post by the Greek foreign ministry noted they discussed "the positive prospects of relations between Greece and Indonesia, the 75th anniversary since the initiation of diplomatic relations, the adherence to the International Law of the Sea, the support of interfaith dialogue, and the situation in the Middle East."
