From the Acropolis to the Louvre - How much are tickets to the most important museums and sites?

Following the announcement of the new pricing policy, gradually starting in 2024, for the corresponding sites in Greece managed by the Ministry of Culture, Proto Thema checked the entrance fees to the world's most famous museums and the most popular cultural heritage sites.

At the famous Louvre Museum in Paris, the general ticket costs 17 euros, and entry is free for children and young people up to 25 years old, while for the British Museum in London, entry is free for the public wishing to see the permanent collection. A special ticket is required for the periodical exhibitions it hosts from time to time.

As for the most popular archaeological and museum sites to visit in Italy, to admire the famous Sistine Chapel, the chapel in the Vatican with its impressive frescoes by Michelangelo, you will have to pay 17 euros, while the same price applies to the entrance to the Vatican Museums, which is a set of museums and collections.

In Spain, general admission to the famous Prado Museum in Madrid is 15 euros, with children and young people up to 25 years old not paying a ticket. The visit to the famous and impressive Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona costs 30 euros for adults and includes a guided tour. Entry for children and the disabled is free, while visitors under the age of 30 are entitled to a ticket of 28 euros.

In America, to tour the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (MET), one has to pay an entrance fee of $22. Admission for students is $17, while children under 12 enter for free. As for the Museum of Modern Art in New York, MoMA, the general admission ticket costs $28 for adults and $15 for students and admission for children is free.

At the Hermitage Museum, one of the most important attractions of St. Petersburg, tickets are available from 5 to 11 euros depending on the places to be visited.

We should note here that the general admission tickets for the Acropolis Museum, which has an autonomous pricing policy, as well as the National Archaeological Museum, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, the Byzantine and Christian Museum and the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki, which recently converted into Legal Entities under Public Law, cost 15 euros during the summer season and 10 euros during the winter season.

World Heritage Sites

The famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, since December 2023 when it was converted, amidst strong reactions, has free entry from a museum to a mosque.

A private tour of the Colosseum, the world-famous amphitheatre of Ancient Rome, costs 16 euros for adults to 6 euros for children, depending on the season, while special categories of tickets are available that ensure direct entry without waiting in line, costing 25 to 30 euros for adults.

In Egypt, a simple individual tour of the Pyramids of Giza costs about 6 euros, while to enter the Pyramid of Cheops, you will have to get a separate ticket, the price of which amounts to 12 euros. Various tour packages, including camel rides in the desert, are also available.

Among the most internationally known monuments around the world, the Taj Mahal in India, the impressive mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan to honour the memory of his wife, has, for foreign visitors, a general ticket with a price of around 11.50 euros while to enter the interior of the building one will have to pay an additional 6 euros.

Machu Picchu is also a world cultural heritage site, the ancient city in Southern Peru which to visit one must pay $45, while for students, the prices are lower.

As for the Acropolis, one of the top UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the general admission ticket will be, from April 2025, 30 euros for the whole year, while an additional Sunday of free entry is added every month during the winter season.
