The swearing-in ceremony takes place at the Municipal Market of Kypseli, which was chosen because, as the new mayor said, "it reflects the commitment of the new Municipal Authority to the promotion of the city's neighbourhoods and the prospect of renewal, development and the creation of equal opportunities for all its residents."

"It was threatened many times with collapse and managed to be saved thanks to the residents and the previous municipal authorities," he said.

Doukas is a Greek mechanical engineer and Professor of energy policy and management at the School of Electrical & Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. He is the Mayor-elect of Athens and will assume office on 1 January 2024.

On 3 August 2023, Doukas launched his campaign to be elected mayor of Athens in the 2023 Greek local elections under the Athens Now party and with the support of PASOK – Movement for Change. He campaigned to develop Athens into a green city.
