Greek president inaugurates exhibition at Goulandris Foundation

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou inaugurated a special Neo-Impressionism show at the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation on Tuesday evening.

The art exhibition is titled "Neo-Impressionism in the Colours of the Mediterranean" (1891-1914), and brings paintings not seen in Greece before from major European museums. It opens to the public on Wednesday and will run to April 7, the museum said.

In her address at the inauguration, the Greek president said, "At a difficult and uncertain time, which becomes imprinted in the collective unconscious in opaque, dark colors, the exhibition we are inaugurating today is replete with Mediterranean light and a nod of optimism."

Referring to the East Mediterranean war, climate crisis, and the destruction of the natural environment, Sakellaropoulou noted that "the peaceful atmosphere of these works, the harmony they evoke, the awe they create appears to be more necessary than ever in our violent, turbulent, harsh era."
