Chania: How To Get To The Charming Cretan Destination

Chania

Although the main gateway to Crete is Heraklion Airport, with up to 20 daily flights from Athens and arrivals from other cities in Greece and Europe, Chania Airport is also similarly well-connected but with less frequency.

Taxis from Heraklion to Chania cost around €200, and the journey from Chania airport to the city centre costs around 30€. Buses run from the airport to Chania from 5 am to 11 pm and cost €2.30.

Ferries also connect Piraeus with Chania, and the passage takes around 8 hours. Boats generally run overnight and arrive at breakfast time. The journey can be taken on deck, in airplane-style seats, or cabins with different fares for each.

There are also connections with other islands, mainly in the Cyclades and Dodecanese.

Compact, the historic city centre is very walkable, but Chania is now sprawling out along the coast in both directions. Luckily, the bus network is very good, with connections along the northern resorts towards Rethymno and westwards towards Kissamos.

The bus station is at Kidonias 25 and is well organised with a helpful information desk. Buses connect with Heraklion via Georgioupolis, Rethmyno, and Bali, and there are services to Almyrida, Elafonisi, Falassarna, Hora Sfakion, Kissamos, Omalos, Paleochora, Stavros and all stops on the way.

Urban buses are plentiful and connect the local beaches.
