The Ministry of Environment and Energy of the Hellenic Republic and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC - Masdar have signed a preliminary cooperation agreement for the sustainable transformation of the Greek island of Poros. This agreement, part of the "GR-Eco Islands" Initiative, aims to sponsor green infrastructure projects on the island and promote sustainable development.

The agreement was signed in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece, highlighting the commitment of both countries to climate action and the importance of international cooperation in achieving climate goals.

The agreement includes the development of a 7MW solar PV plant on Poros, which will cover a large part of the island's energy needs. It also involves the introduction of a fully electric ferry, the conversion of existing traditional boats and buses into electric vehicles, and the establishment of a publicly accessible smart EV charging infrastructure network on the island.

Additionally, the agreement focuses on implementing a "Zero Waste" model on Poros, with a goal of 100% landfill diversion and circular waste management.

The Ministry and Masdar will now work together to determine the technical aspects of the projects, with the aim of finalizing the framework for execution in the coming months.

Greece has significant solar and wind energy potential, and the country's goal is for renewable energy sources to become the primary source of electricity by 2030.

Masdar, as a leading clean energy company in the UAE, is committed to supporting Greece in its clean energy goals and preserving the natural beauty of Poros. The company has extensive experience in renewable energy projects and has worked on sustainable initiatives in island nations around the world.

The "GR-Eco Islands" Initiative, launched by the Greek Government, aims to transform Greece's islands into models of sustainable development. The strategy focuses on decarbonizing electricity production and implementing crucial infrastructure projects to enhance the quality of life for residents and protect marine and coastal ecosystems.

Through this cooperation agreement, Greece and the UAE are showcasing the potential benefits of international cooperation and setting an example for other island nations to follow in achieving sustainability and renewable energy goals.
