New Book on Maria Callas Takes Dig at 'Gold Digger Jackie O'

Daisy Goodwin's latest historical fiction novel, 'Diva', dives into the life of opera legend Maria Callas and her passionate, yet tragic, love affair with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.

At the book launch, Goodwin sheds light on her portrayal of the complex relationship. While she clearly admires Callas, she pulls no punches with Onassis's second wife, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

"Maria was a true goddess, driven by love," Goodwin reveals. "On the other hand, Jacqueline seems to have been solely motivated by money."

Goodwin goes on to illustrate the stark contrast between the two women. "Maria fiercely maintained her independence, even refusing to let Onassis pay for her flights on his airline. Jacqueline, on the other hand, struck me as someone actively pursuing wealth."

The novel explores how Callas, despite her immense talent and celebrity, ultimately found heartbreak at the hands of Onassis, who left her for the former First Lady.
