Greece Cracks Down on Violence Against Medical Workers

Greece is taking a strong stance against violence towards healthcare workers with the upcoming enforcement of stricter penalties in the new Criminal Code. This reform coincides with Pan-European Day of Awareness against violence against health workers.

Justice Minister George Florides announced the changes at an event organised by the Medical Association of Thessaloniki. The new code, effective May 1st, strengthens legal protection for doctors, nurses, paramedics, and patients in hospitals.

"We believe this provision will effectively shield those who work tirelessly in hospitals, especially during demanding shifts, from verbal abuse and physical violence," Florides emphasised. The harsher penalties aim to deter such acts and ensure a safe working environment for medical professionals.

President of the Panhellenic Medical Association, Athanasios Exadaktylos, stressed the importance of combating violence against healthcare workers. He highlighted the negative impact it has on both medical staff and patients, arguing that a stressed or fearful medical professional cannot provide optimal care.

The Medical Association of Thessaloniki, represented by Nikos Nitsas, acknowledged the challenges within the healthcare system, but condemned violence as a response. Nitsas called for improved staffing and patient care alongside the stricter penalties.

While the event addressed violence, tensions arose with doctors and health workers protesting the state of the healthcare system and opposing evening surgeries.
