Greece makes "historic" Canadair procurement 50 years after initial purchase

Climate Crisis & Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias described on Friday the acquisition of a Canadair aircraft after 50 years as a "historic moment."

Kikilias announced to parliament that Greece is advancing in procuring the latest generation of Canadair 515 CL aircraft as outlined in the bill titled "Approval of a Draft Contract for the Supply of DHC-515 Aircraft."

This acquisition is possible through a framework agreement involving the European Union, its member states, the Canadian government, and the manufacturing company.

It is worth noting that seven Canadair CL-515 aircraft will be financed through the National Strategic Reference Framework (ESPA) and European programs. Greece will also acquire two additional similar aircraft through.

The RescEU program aims to purchase 12 Canadairs, which will be distributed in pairs to six member states - Greece, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Croatia.

The aircraft was specifically built for the purpose of providing aerial support for firefighting missions.
