Thessaloniki is preparing to host a landmark event for the LGBTQ+ community in South East Europe. EuroPride 2024, the continent's largest LGBTQ+ celebration, will take place in the vibrant Greek city from June 21st to 29th.

Organisers are expecting over 40,000 attendees to join the festivities, themed 'Perseverance – Progress – Prosperity'. This slogan reflects the event's aim to promote equality, justice, and a thriving future for LGBTQ+ people within an inclusive society.

“We are keeping an eye on bookings and want the event to be a celebration for the whole city and its visitors,” said Apostolos Karabairis, a representative for the event organiser, speaking to Greek TV station ERT-3.

Thessaloniki secured the hosting rights for EuroPride 2024 back in 2017. Originally scheduled for 2020, the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The nine-day festival promises a diverse program across multiple city centre locations. The waterfront promenade, Xarchakos Park, the Thessaloniki Port cultural space, and Aristotelous Square will be key hubs for festivities. The grand finale on June 29th will feature a vibrant EuroPride Parade winding through the historic center and past the waterfront, culminating with the illumination of the city's iconic White Tower in rainbow colours. Partner organisations from Greece and Europe will contribute additional events throughout the week.

“By hosting EuroPride in South East Europe, we aspire to fight discrimination against LGBTI+ people; boost confidence and hope for the community in the Balkans and beyond; and contribute to making all of Europe a safe and inclusive zone for all genders, sexualities, expressions and all diversity in general,” Karampairis stressed.

Thessaloniki's selection as EuroPride host is a positive step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in the region. Travel website TravelPulse recently ranked the city among the top 20 LGBTQ-friendly destinations for 2024, praising its diverse activities, stunning architecture, and rich history.
