Legendary Greek Actor Giannis Fertis Passes Away

Athens, Greece - Giannis Fertis, a giant of Greek theater, cinema, and television, passed away today at the age of 86.

Born in Athens in 1939, Fertis studied acting under the legendary Karolos Koun and made his stage debut in 1963. He quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of the most respected and beloved actors in Greece.

Fertis was known for his exceptional talent and versatility. He excelled in both classical and contemporary theater, tackling roles by Shakespeare, Chekhov, Strindberg, and Greek playwrights such as Vasilis Kampanellis and Leonidas Prosalidis. His performances were characterized by their depth, sensitivity, and commanding stage presence.

Fertis also made significant contributions to Greek cinema and television. He appeared in over 30 films and 15 television series, including notable roles in "Teacher with the Golden Eyes" and "The Notary." His ability to breathe life into complex characters made him a favorite of directors and audiences alike.

Beyond his work in theater, film, and television, Fertis was also a talented singer and narrator. He released a duet with Aphrodite Manou in 1971 and narrated songs by renowned Greek musicians such as George Dalaras and Manolis Mitsias.

Fertis was married twice, first to actress Xenia Kalogeropoulou and then to Mimis Deneisis. From 2001 until his death, he was engaged to actress Marina Psalti.

Giannis Fertis was a true icon of Greek culture. His exceptional talent, dedication to his craft, and unwavering passion for art left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of his country.
