Addressing a gathering at the Elise and Basil Goulandris Foundation for the National Screening Program ‘Prolamvano’ (I prevent) on Friday, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasised the vital role of preventive healthcare in bolstering the nation's health system. Mitsotakis hailed the event on Friday as a realisation of a long-held aspiration, highlighting the significance of early detection through screening programs.
"Prevention has often been neglected in our perception of the healthcare system," Mitsotakis remarked, stressing the lifesaving potential of preventive measures in combating prevalent illnesses such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
Acknowledging the apprehensions individuals may harbour towards screenings, Mitsotakis cited the success of initiatives like the 'Fofi Gennimata' breast cancer screening program, named after the late PASOK leader. Over 20,000 women benefited from early cancer detection under this program, underscoring the importance of proactive healthcare participation.
The Prime Minister underscored the pivotal role of lifestyle habits in promoting longevity and quality of life, highlighting the significance of regular exercise, avoidance of smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, adherence to a balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight. Mitsotakis cautioned that neglecting these habits could lead to a significant reduction in lifespan.
Furthermore, Mitsotakis emphasised the potential of technology, including the 'myhealthapp', to enhance preventive and therapeutic interventions. He hailed the revolutionary impact of artificial intelligence in healthcare management and disease prevention, emphasising the critical role of European Recovery Fund resources in supporting preventive healthcare initiatives.
Reminding the public of their role in healthcare management, Mitsotakis urged citizens not to disregard screening notifications, emphasizing the life-saving potential of timely interventions. As Greece prepares for upcoming European elections, Mitsotakis highlighted the integral role of European funding in shaping national healthcare policies, positioning Greece as a leader in innovative healthcare approaches that could serve as models for other European nations.
