Missing Dutch Tourist Found Dead in Samos After Drone Search

Samos

The Dutch tourist who had gone missing in Samos in recent days was found dead.

The body of the Dutch tourist was located by a drone of the Icarus Team of the Fire Department at the location of Limnionas in Samos on Saturday morning (15.6.24).

Official identification of the 75-year-old tourist, who disappeared last Sunday afternoon while hiking, is expected to follow.

The Dutch tourist was last seen taking "Path 13," a half-hour route leading towards the monastery of Agios Ioannis.

During his disappearance, there were heatwave conditions in the area.

Heatwaves and Hiking

As experts emphasize, heat waves can pose a serious threat to human health, so caution must be exercised before exploring trails and gorges.

In addition to the British presenter Michael Mosley, who was found dead in Symi on Sunday morning (09.06.2024) after days of searching, the same fate befell a Dutch tourist in Rethymno and a 70-year-old woman in Sitia.

Meanwhile, since Tuesday, a 59-year-old American has been missing in Amorgos.

A common characteristic in all these cases is that these five individuals decided to hike under unsuitable conditions, including unbearable heat, and some at inappropriate times.

Indeed, the British newspaper The Guardian, in an article on Friday, highlighted that tourists coming to Greece are not sufficiently informed about the health risks posed by heatwave conditions.
