Greece Battles Escalating Wildfires, Orders More Evacuations

Greek authorities have issued new evacuation orders as wildfires intensify on the island of Evia and in Nafpaktos in central Greece.

Greek authorities have ordered additional evacuations as wildfires continue to intensify on the island of Evia and in Nafpaktos in central Greece.

Firefighters are currently battling a blaze in Nea Artaki on Evia to prevent it from reaching residential areas. Another fire on the island has been contained, while a flare-up in the town of Markopoulo near Athens was swiftly brought under control.

Strong winds, coupled with temperatures nearing 40°C (104°F), have exacerbated the wildfire risk over the past fortnight. Earlier this month, Greece experienced its hottest June day on record, prompting daily firefighting efforts against dozens of blazes.

A large fire is currently raging in Agios Vasilios Rethymnon. The front is located in Akoumia, Prodromou area, Krya Vrysi, and towards Triopetra..

The Attica region, encompassing the capital Athens, has been placed on high alert for wildfires on Wednesday, along with several other areas including Evia and the island of Crete. Wildfires have posed a threat in Greece since the 1980s, but the accelerating impacts of global warming are intensifying their severity.
