Athens, Greece – A brazen daylight assassination in the affluent Athens suburb of Psychiko has sparked a major manhunt. The victim, identified as 54-year-old civil engineer Panagiotis Stathis, was shot multiple times in his car Tuesday morning.

Witnesses report a lone gunman on a motorcycle approached Stathis’ vehicle at the intersection of Kritis and Eikostis Pemptis Martiou streets around 8:30 am. The assailant fired at least eight shots into the car before fleeing the scene. An audio recording suggests the shooter paused after an initial volley of bullets before delivering a final shot.

Police recovered over a dozen shell casings at the scene. The victim’s business partner, who owns the BMW Stathis was driving, alerted authorities to the crime.

Investigators are looking into a possible connection with a 2021 assault on Mykonos, where Stathis was reportedly attacked. Despite filing a report, no suspects were identified in that case.

Stathis was known for his work as a land surveyor and technical consultant on Mykonos and throughout Greece. He provided services to both local municipalities and construction licensing authorities.
