An appeals court in Thessaloniki has sentenced two young men to 5 years and 3 months in prison each for the 2017 death of 24-year-old PAOK FC fan Nassos Konstantinou.

The charges included deadly exposure and dangerous physical injury, with mitigating factors considered by the court.

One defendant has been taken into custody, while the second, currently represented by a lawyer, is considered a fugitive and will be jailed once apprehended.

The incident occurred on April 27, 2017, after the PAOK-Panathinaikos Greek Cup semifinal. Konstantinou and three friends were attacked by masked individuals wielding crowbars, brass knuckles, and wooden pieces. Two friends escaped, but Konstantinou and another friend ran towards the street.

While fleeing, Konstantinou was struck by a car, whose driver was later acquitted. He suffered severe head injuries and died on May 4. His friend, who testified in court, sustained non-life-threatening head and hand injuries.

Initially, the defendants, now aged 26 and 27, were sentenced to 9 years and 8 months but were released on restrictions pending the appeal. They have consistently denied involvement, claiming they were elsewhere during the attack.
