Kos, Chios, and Geraki Fires Extinguished; High Fire Risk Anticipated for Wednesday

Late Tuesday, the Fire Brigade confirmed that fires on the islands of Kos and Chios have been successfully extinguished.

Firefighters remain vigilant in these areas to prevent any potential rekindling of the flames.

In Crete, the fire that erupted in Geraki, within the Kastelli region of Heraklion, has also been put out.

Over the past 24 hours, Greece experienced a surge in fire outbreaks, with 36 reported incidents. The Fire Brigade efficiently managed to extinguish 33 of these fires early on.

Authorities are investigating the causes of these fires through local Fire Brigade offices. The Fire Brigade has urged citizens to remain especially cautious and to strictly adhere to official guidance in the event of a fire.

Looking ahead, the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Ministry has issued a warning for a very high fire risk on Wednesday. The regions of Chania (Crete), Laconia (Peloponnese), and Kythira island are at a grade 4 risk level, which is one step below the maximum alert level of 5.
