Speaking at the launch of Qantas' new direct Perth-Paris route, CEO Vanessa Hudson hinted at the airline's interest in adding a seasonal service to Athens, capitalizing on Greece's booming popularity among Australian travelers.
"Every person I speak to at the moment is going to Greece," she remarked, acknowledging the strong demand for convenient access to the iconic destination. This new route would complement Qantas' existing European offerings from Perth, which include year-round flights to London and Paris, alongside the newly launched seasonal service to Rome.
The expansion hinges on the arrival of new long-range aircraft, with both Boeing 787s and Airbus A350-1000s slated to join the Qantas fleet in the coming years. These aircraft, ideally situated in Perth, will provide the necessary range and capacity to connect Western Australia directly with sought-after European destinations like Athens.
While specific timelines remain under wraps, Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace emphasized the airline's data-driven and agile approach to route planning. This suggests that if demand remains strong and the numbers align, Australian travelers could be sipping cocktails and soaking up the Grecian sun sooner rather than later.
In addition to Athens, Qantas has its sights set on several other exciting destinations, including Seattle, Chicago, and Las Vegas. Each city offers a unique appeal for Australian travelers, and Qantas is carefully analyzing market demand and route feasibility to determine which routes will take flight.
