Two cattle corpses were discovered washed ashore on the beaches of Lefkada, a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, raising concerns among local authorities.

The first carcass was found on Thursday at Pefkoulia beach, a popular nudist spot in the island's southwest. Swimmers alerted the coast guard and fire department, who promptly responded to remove the body and decontaminate the area.

Authorities noted that the animal had a rope tied to its leg, attached to a heavy object, suggesting it had been deliberately dumped at sea.

A second dead cow was discovered on Friday at Agios Ioannis beach, near the island's centre. Municipal cleaning crews and veterinary staff have been working at the site since the morning.

Officials fear that a ship may have illegally discarded multiple dead animals, with the possibility of more washing ashore in the coming days.
