On Friday, Defence Minister Nikos Dendias attended the 81st anniversary events commemorating the liberation of Megisti Island.
Speaking at the occasion, Dendias underscored the strategic importance of Kastellorizo, a key part of the Megisti complex, within Greece’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.
Dendias affirmed that Greece's position on Kastellorizo is firmly grounded in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. He rejected any opposing views as unacceptable, emphasising that Greece is constitutionally mandated to uphold its maritime rights. Allowing any infringement would not only create legal contradictions but also undermine international maritime law.
Discussing Greece's EEZ agreement with Egypt, Dendias highlighted how it bolsters both national and European interests while reinforcing Greece's sovereign rights in the region. He noted that Greece, Egypt, and Cyprus maintain a unified stance, reflecting their commitment to respecting international and maritime law.
