Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will be honoured with the "Nikos Nikiforidis" Peace Award today, September 24, 2024, at the Miltiadis Evert Amphitheatre of Technopolis in Athens, starting at 19:00.
The award recognises his contributions surrounding the Prespa Agreement, which aimed to normalise relations with North Macedonia.
Tsipras is expected to deliver a brief statement during the ceremony, although sources suggest his speech will not address internal party issues within SYRIZA. He has largely refrained from commenting on the party's ongoing struggles.
The Nikos Nikiforidis Award will also be presented to two representatives of the bicommunal movement advocating for coexistence in a united Cyprus: George Liasias, President of the Union of Cypriot Refugees in Greece, and Neshe Yashin, a Turkish Cypriot poet and professor at the University of Cyprus.
Established by the PADOP (Observatory of International Organisations & Globalisation), the award has been given annually since 2018 to honor the legacy of peace campaigner Nikos Nikiforidis. At just 22 years old, Nikiforidis led the Peaceful Youth Front in 1950, promoting the Stockholm Appeal for nuclear disarmament. His activism resulted in his arrest and execution on March 5, 1951, in Thessaloniki.
