The earthquake occurred in a marine area off the coast of Zakros, Sitia.

The earthquake's epicenter was located 41 kilometers south-southeast of Zakros in a marine area. The focal depth was estimated at 10 kilometers, according to the automatic solution of the Geodynamic Institute.
