Thessaloniki Mourns the Loss of Visionary Former Mayor Yiannis Boutaris

Thessaloniki, Greece – Yiannis Boutaris, the transformative former mayor of Thessaloniki who reshaped the city's cultural landscape and championed progressive causes during his two terms from 2011 to 2019, has passed away at the age of 82.

His death was announced by Kyr-Yianni, the winemaking business he founded and which is run by his two sons, in a Facebook post, in both English and Greek.

“It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Yiannis Boutaris, our founder and iconic winemaker. He passed away tonight, at the age of 82, surrounded by his family.

His death marks the end of an era for Greece's second-largest city, where he remains a beloved and sometimes controversial figure.

Born in Thessaloniki in 1942, Boutaris first made his mark in the wine industry, following in his family's footsteps at the Boutari winery before establishing the renowned Kir-Yianni estate. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to quality quickly brought him recognition, but it was his entry into public life that cemented his legacy.

Boutaris's mayoralty was marked by a bold vision for Thessaloniki. He prioritized cultural development, fostering a vibrant arts scene and strengthening the city's ties to its multicultural past. He also embraced often-controversial stances on social issues, becoming a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and the legalization of cannabis. His open discussion of his own struggles with alcoholism, which he overcame in 1991, resonated deeply with many and further solidified his image as a candid and relatable public figure.

Beyond social issues, Boutaris was a passionate environmentalist, founding the ecological organization Arcturos dedicated to protecting brown bears and wolves in Greece. His commitment to environmental sustainability influenced his policies as mayor, pushing for green initiatives and a more eco-conscious approach to urban development.
