His death was announced by Kyr-Yianni, the winemaking business he founded and which is run by his two sons, in a Facebook post, in both English and Greek.

“It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of Yiannis Boutaris, our founder and iconic winemaker. He passed away tonight, at the age of 82, surrounded by his family.

His death marks the end of an era for Greece's second-largest city, where he remains a beloved and sometimes controversial figure.

A champion of progressive causes, he reshaped the city's cultural landscape and advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, cannabis legalization, and environmental protection. Born in Thessaloniki in 1942, Boutaris first made his mark in the wine industry, following in his family's footsteps at the Boutari winery before establishing the renowned Kir-Yianni estate.
