Reported incidents of domestic violence against women in Greece surged during the first ten months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, according to a statement from the Greek Police on Sunday.
Police records indicate that 18,427 incidents were reported from January to October 2024, a significant increase from the 9,860 cases during the equivalent period in 2023.
Most victims were women, and the majority of perpetrators were men, although there were also male victims of domestic violence.
Between January and October 2024, there were 5,583 male victims and 15,571 female victims. In terms of perpetrators, 15,413 were male, while 3,565 were female.
Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chryssochoidis emphasized that the apparent increase in incidents is partly due to a higher rate of reporting to authorities, not just an actual rise in incidents.
It is worth noting that in 2021, Greek Police established six specialized offices nationwide to handle domestic violence cases, in response to the growing number of femicide cases. Additionally, they have made a “Panic button” available to any victim of domestic violence who requests it.
