Greece to Operate Three Belharra Frigates by End of 2026

France has faced criticism for selling Greece a fleet of highly advanced Belh@rra frigates, equipped with more potent weaponry than those destined for the French Navy itself. This decision has raised questions about French defense strategy and its implications for regional security.

Greece's first Belharra frigate, built by France's Naval Group, is now expected to be delivered by the end of 2025, a nine-month delay from original projections. While the reasons for the delay are unclear, sources suggest it allows time to address any initial technical issues before handover to the Hellenic Navy. The frigate will then require approximately a year of preparations before becoming operational.

Despite the delay on the first vessel, Greece anticipates having three Belharra frigates in operation by the end of 2026, with the third frigate's delivery potentially ahead of schedule.

Negotiations are ongoing between Greece and France for a fourth Belharra frigate, initially announced by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias in September 2024. Greek officials aim to finalize the deal in 2025, with delivery anticipated by late 2028. The estimated cost of the fourth frigate is expected to be over one billion euros, similar to the price of the first three.
